Modular Gaming Desk Systems 2026: Are They Worth the Upgrade?
Reconfigure instead of replace is the pitch. We compared the published prices and load ratings of Secretlab's MAGNUS line and Wyrmwood's track desk against IKEA's gaming desks.

You're redoing your gaming corner and the desk is the biggest single line on the list. Modular desks pitch one idea: buy the frame once, then add or move modules as your setup changes instead of buying a new desk. This guide checks that pitch against published prices and load ratings, not against marketing photos, and gives you a yes or no by reader profile.
The numbers:
- $899 is Secretlab's listed price for the MAGNUS Pro sit-to-stand desk, against $129.99 for IKEA's HUVUDSPELARE gaming desk (both checked Oct 6, 2026).
- 265 lbs (120 kg) is the MAGNUS Pro's rated load, and Secretlab states it includes the desktop's own 56.2 lbs.
- No public price: Wyrmwood's modular desk page shows no price; orders go through Kickstarter late pledges.
Price check (Oct 2026): prices below come from the manufacturer or retailer page on October 6, 2026. Secretlab and IKEA both run frequent promotions, so prices change. Check before buying. We compared published specs; no desk was tested in person for this guide.
How the modularity works, mechanically
Two designs define the category, and they solve "modular" differently.
Track-and-rail (Wyrmwood Modular Desk). According to Wyrmwood, aluminum T-track channels run the length of the desk's underside, and every module mounts, slides and locks into them: a PC tower mount, cable management housing, cubbies and drawers, a central drawer, a desk extension and a desk platform. A magnetic rail takes smaller snap-on accessories such as cup holders and a hobby shelf. Wyrmwood offers standard and XL sizes and several hardwoods, including cherry, black walnut and padauk.
Metal frame with a magnetic ecosystem (Secretlab MAGNUS line). The desk keeps a fixed shape. The "modular" part is a magnetic steel surface plus a catalog of add-ons that attach to it or bolt to the frame. Secretlab describes the MAGNUS Pro as a sit-to-stand desk with a full-length cable management tray behind a rear-hinged cover, dual motors, and a fully magnetic steel surface. Its Premium PC Mount, which hangs a tower off the desk, is listed at $99.

In short: Wyrmwood lets you change where things are; Secretlab lets you add things to a desk whose shape stays put.

The honest math: Secretlab's base MAGNUS Pro costs about 6.9 times IKEA's cheapest gaming desk, and still about 1.5 times IKEA's electric UTMANING. What the premium buys is the magnetic ecosystem, the integrated cable tray and Secretlab's add-on catalog. What it doesn't buy is a bigger desk: the 59.1-inch MAGNUS Pro is narrower than IKEA's $279.99 UTESPELARE.

How to choose
Answer these four questions before you pay the modular premium.
- Will your setup change in the next 12 months? A second monitor, a switch to standing, a capture card and mic for streaming. If yes, add-ons have a real payoff window. If you'll add a second player, our guide to twin-desk layouts for two players covers the room plan first.
- Have you already replaced a "final" desk more than once? That repeat purchase is what a modular frame is supposed to end.
- Is your real problem space, or cable clutter and monitor height? If it's the latter, a clamp-on monitor arm and an under-desk cable tray on a fixed desk solve it without a new desk.
- Are you likely to move within two years? A full-metal sit/stand desk and a solid-wood track desk are both heavy. A flat-pack desk is easier to take apart and re-box.
If you answered yes to 1 or 2 and no to 4, the premium buys something real. If you answered no to 1 and 2, put the money into a chair or monitor instead.
Short on floor space rather than desk space? Mounting your rig on the wall instead frees the floor under any desk, modular or not.
Safety line
Safety line: read what a desk's load rating includes. Secretlab states that the MAGNUS Pro's 265 lbs (120 kg) maximum "includes desk top weight," and lists the 59.1-inch desktop at 56.2 lbs. That leaves roughly 209 lbs (95 kg) for monitors, arms, PC, speakers and anything you lean on the desk. Do the same subtraction for any sit/stand desk before you hang a tower and two monitors off it.
Two more limits for motorized desks:
- Power. Secretlab lists a maximum power output load of 12A / 1440W for both the MAGNUS Pro and the MAGNUS Evo. Two gaming PCs, monitors and lighting can approach that, so add up the wattage before plugging everything into the desk.
- Cables at full height. A sit/stand desk travels: the MAGNUS Pro's range is 25.6 to 49.2 inches (65 to 125 cm). Leave enough slack in every cable for the top of that range, or the desk will pull your PC or monitor with it.
Skip it if
- Your setup is stable and the budget is tight. A $129.99 fixed desk plus a monitor arm covers most of what a single player needs.
- You rent and might move soon. Heavy metal and hardwood desks are harder to move than flat-pack.
- Your real bottleneck is the chair or the monitor. The gap between a $129.99 desk and an $899 desk buys a lot of monitor.
- You need a published price before committing. Wyrmwood's page doesn't show one, so you'd be pledging through Kickstarter rather than buying off a shelf.
Our pick by profile
| Profile | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small budget | IKEA HUVUDSPELARE, $129.99 | Lowest price on IKEA's US gaming desk page (Oct 6, 2026) |
| Small space | IKEA BOLLSIDAN, $299.99 | Smallest footprint here (47 1/4 x 27 1/2 in) with sit/stand |
| Growing setup | Secretlab MAGNUS Pro, $899 | Published load rating, magnetic add-ons, integrated cable tray |
| Duo room | Two matched fixed desks first | Test the layout before paying twice for premium frames |
Building the PC that goes on top? Our three parts lists around $800 are dated and priced the same way.
