Soul Land: Awakening World Review (October 2026): A Pretty Open World With a Familiar Gacha Squeeze
The first 3D open-world Soul Land game looks the part and fights well. The store, the PC port and the phone temperature are another story. Here's what the listings and player reviews say, as of October 2026.

Verdict
A good-looking, action-first take on the Soul Land story that mobile players rate well and PC players mostly don't. Fans of the IP will find enough here to try it; everyone else should expect a familiar gacha squeeze and set a spending limit first.
Mobile MMORPGs built on a famous license usually get the look right and the business model predictable. Soul Land: Awakening World, published by 37Games, is billed as the first 3D open-world MMORPG of the Soul Land saga, licensed from both the original novels and the anime. Here's the short version: as of October 2026, mobile players rate it well and PC players mostly don't, and the most common complaint on Steam is spending pressure. It's a fair try for fans of the series and an easy skip for anyone allergic to gacha.
This review is built from the store listings, age ratings, guides and player reviews linked at the end. We did not run a hands-on playtest for it, and where we quote players, we say where they said it.

On paper, the pitch is simple. You awaken a Spirit, hunt creatures called Spirimon across forests and frozen landscapes, and fight with non-targeted attacks, precise dodges and aerial moves, according to the Steam store description. Pocket Gamer's launch coverage adds that you can switch between Spirits mid-fight to chain combos, and that the world includes legendary beasts known as the Seven Monsters.
What works
It delivers on the "3D open world" promise. The store page and launch coverage agree on what the game is: a full open world rather than a corridor of stages, built around the hunt-and-grow loop the source material is known for. Hunting a creature to get stronger, then hunting a bigger one, is a natural fit for an open map. It gives exploration a job.

The combat is built for hands, not auto-play. Dodges, aerial combos and Spirit switching are front and center in the official description. That's a step up from the tap-to-auto combat many licensed MMOs settle for. Even one negative Steam review concedes that "the battle style works."
Mobile players like it. On Google Play in the US, the game holds 4.5 stars from 18,300 reviews, with more than 500,000 downloads, as of October 2026. Mobile is clearly the platform it was designed around.
The PC version is light. Twenty gigabytes of storage and 12 GB of RAM at minimum is modest for a 3D open world. Most gaming laptops clear that bar.
What doesn't
Steam players are split, at best. The Steam store shows "Mixed": 48% positive out of 468 reviews, and 52% of the 44 reviews from the last 30 days. That is a long way from the mobile score.
Pay-to-win is the top complaint. We read the 179 English-language Steam reviews available on October 5, 2026. Thirty-three of them mention pay-to-win, and 26 of those are negative. Some reviewers say they did not realize it was a gacha game until they launched it. Others point at stamina limits: once you run out, there is little left to do that day.
The PC port feels like a phone game on a monitor. Steam's own listing flags the third-party 37Games account. In reviews, players complain about a launcher login through Facebook or Google, no controller support, and voice acting only in Chinese. One of the most visible threads on the Steam discussion board asks for official controller support and high-framerate options.
The opening is slow. Pocket Tactics notes that summoning only unlocks at level 17, after the "Soul-Awakening Realm" main quest, which takes about an hour, "or more, if you're not skipping dialogue." One recent Steam review calls the beginning "quite boring."
The overheating question
The clearest report we found is on Google Play in the US. One Google Play review, marked helpful by a few players, praises the combat but says the game is overheating the reviewer's Snapdragon phone and asks the developer to fix it. We did not find a large Steam thread on the topic in October 2026, so treat this as a real report rather than proof that every phone overheats.

It's also not surprising. A 3D open world rendered for long sessions puts a sustained load on a phone's chip, and that is when phones throttle and heat up. If you want to know why phones overheat during long gaming sessions and which fixes help, our guide covers it. The short practical version: lower the graphics settings before a long hunt, avoid playing while charging, and take breaks. On PC, the issue does not apply.
Short sessions. Lower settings. Cooler phone.
The free-to-play math
Here's what is documented about the gacha, and how reliable each part is:
| Claim | What the source says | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| When summoning unlocks | Level 17, after the "Soul-Awakening Realm" quest | Pocket Tactics guide, updated Aug 2026 |
| Free currency early on | "Not much free currency to begin with" | Pocket Tactics guide, updated Aug 2026 |
| Pull rates | Roughly 2% SSR, 16% SR, 82% R | Unofficial fan wiki |
| Beginner guarantee | Vanguard summon awards an SSR by the 30th pull at the latest | Unofficial fan wiki |
| Free pulls from leveling | Batches around levels 20, 25 and 28 | Unofficial fan wiki |
On paper, the early game has a safety net: a 30-pull guarantee on the beginner banner and free pulls tied to leveling, according to the fan wiki. In practice, Pocket Tactics found little free currency at the start, and Steam reviewers describe spending pressure growing as you level. The rates above come from a fan site, not from 37Games, so check the rate screen in the game before you pull.
If gacha terms like pity and guarantees are new to you, read a plain-English guide to gacha pity before you spend anything. Then pick a monthly limit and stick to it. The game will not pick one for you.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Try it if:
- You are a Soul Land fan who wanted an open-world, action-combat version of the story.
- You play mostly on your phone and are fine with a gacha model.
- You can set a spending limit and keep it.
Skip it if:
- You want a PC-first MMO with controller support and English voice acting.
- Gacha and stamina limits are dealbreakers for you.
- Your phone already runs hot in 3D games.
Verdict
Stop playing NPC: decide your budget before the game decides it for you. Soul Land: Awakening World gets a 6.4 from us. It earns points for an open world and combat that match what the license promised, a strong mobile rating and a light PC install. It loses points for a Mixed Steam score, pay-to-win as the top player complaint, a PC port that players describe as unfinished, and one Google Play report of a phone running hot. This score is based on documented systems, store data and player reports as of October 2026, not on a hands-on playtest.
A fan's game, first and foremost.
