Where Winds Meet Review (October 2026): A Generous Wuxia Open World With an Expensive Wardrobe

A huge, free wuxia open world that does not sell power, but does sell some very pricey outfits. Here is what the official notes, store data and player reviews say, as of October 2026.

Verdict

A rare free-to-play open world that keeps its combat and story off the paywall. The catch is a cosmetic gacha with very high ceilings and a paid pass that adds real convenience perks. Worth your first hour if you can ignore the wardrobe shop.

Free-to-play open worlds usually make you choose between a big map and a fair shop. Where Winds Meet, NetEase's wuxia action RPG set in ancient China, promises both: a sprawling martial-arts world and a store that only sells looks. Here's the short version: as of October 2026, the documented evidence backs the "no pay-to-win" claim, and players rate the game highly. The real cost sits in the wardrobe, where premium outfits can run to hundreds of dollars.

On paper, this is a solo-first game with online layers on top. The Steam listing describes a single-player campaign, co-op for up to four players, PvP and guild warfare, seven weapon types and more than 30 martial arts and mystic skills. Xbox Wire's launch post claims more than 150 hours of narrative content; that is the publisher's figure, not ours.

The 100 million figure needs a footnote. Inven Global points out that NetEase did not say how it counts players, and the total includes the Chinese service as well as the global PC, console and mobile versions. In June, at the Xbox launch, the official count was 80 million.

What's new in October 2026

The global build is on version 2.2, "Perilous Eminence," which went live on September 16, 2026. It closes the Hidden Mountain storyline with a new main quest chapter, the Skyward City Ruins campaign and new world bosses. A week later, on September 23, NetEase added Transdust Ruins, a multiplayer mode built as a collaboration with Escape from Tarkov. It opens at level 20 and can be played solo, as a trio, or with AI companions.

The 2.2 patch notes themselves are mostly housekeeping: guild roster tools, Guild War season stats, a blacklist for guild bases and a handful of bug fixes. One line is worth flagging for returning players: the Reflection Temple entrance is closed "until Jiangnan arrives," which hints at the next region without giving a date.

Season 4, "Forged Ahead," ends on November 7, 2026 at 4:59:59 (UTC+8), according to Game8's event tracker. As of October 5, the official news page lists no Season 5 or version 2.3 date for the global release. If you start now, you have about a month of the current season left.

The content pace is the strongest argument for the game. In under a year the global version has added the Hexi, Imperial Palace and Hidden Mountain expansions and an Xbox port. Live games that ship this often rarely run out of things to do.

What works

The monetization line is drawn in the right place. The Steam store page states that purchases are cosmetic and that the game has "no pay-to-win" model. Mein-MMO's breakdown of the shop reached the same conclusion: free players earn the resources that matter through exploration and play. In practice, players on Steam mostly agree. Among the 600 most recent English-language Steam reviews we read on October 5, only eight mentioned pay-to-win, and six of those were positive reviews saying the game is not.

Player sentiment is high, and it has held. As of October 2026, 86% of 64,632 English-language Steam reviews are positive ("Very Positive"), and 81% of the 1,488 reviews from the last 30 days are positive. On Google Play in the US, the game sits at 4.3 stars from 58,700 reviews with more than 5 million downloads. That is a lot of people liking a free game for almost a year.

Movement and exploration carry the experience. The store page sells it on rooftop parkour and open-world freedom. Recent reviews keep coming back to the same point: "exploration" and "open world" appear in 62 of those 600 reviews, and only five of those are negative. Sixty-two people praising a map is a signal.

It is everywhere. PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, iOS and Android, with cross-play. Your platform is not a reason to skip it.

What doesn't

Critics were cooler than players. Metacritic lists 72 on PC (23 critic reviews) and 74 on PS5 (15 reviews), both "mixed or average." The recurring complaint is that the game tries to be everything at once, with cluttered menus and a lot of systems. Some Steam reviews say the same thing in plainer words: a lot more menus, a lot more "everything."

The paid pass is not purely cosmetic. According to Mein-MMO, the Elite (€9.09) and Premium (€18) pass tiers include convenience perks: +2 medicine carry capacity, +12 equipment slots, a portable merchant and lower stat requirements on equipment. None of that buys a boss kill. It does make daily play smoother for people who pay, and the "cosmetic only" label should come with that asterisk.

AI features divide the audience. Steam's AI disclosure says the game uses AI-driven NPC text and voice chat that responds in real time, plus optional AI-assisted face generation. Twelve of the 600 recent reviews raised AI, and ten of those were negative. If that is a dealbreaker for you, now you know before you start.

It is a big install. 130 GB of free space at minimum on PC, 200 GB recommended. Budget-PC players should check their drive first.

The free-to-play math

Here's where the bill lands, using the figures that have been published:

What you can buyDocumented priceSource and date
Battle pass, Elite tier€9.09Mein-MMO, Nov 2025
Battle pass, Premium tier€18.00Mein-MMO, Nov 2025
Monthly card€4.59Mein-MMO, Nov 2025
Premium currency packs€0.90 to €182Mein-MMO, Nov 2025
Premium cosmetic bannerabout $2 per pull; pity at 150 pulls (about $300)All Things How, Nov 2025 (player calculations)

On paper, nothing that affects your build is locked behind a purchase. In practice, the premium outfit banners are where spending gets out of hand. All Things How reported that the most exclusive outfits need two pity tokens, which puts the worst case near $600 for a single outfit. That is a player-calculated figure, not an official price. ComicBook.com reported community estimates of around $1,000 for one recent premium outfit. Prices may have moved since late 2025, so check the in-game store before you spend.

If you want to understand what "pity" means before you pull, read how banner pity works before you spend. If you want the look without the bill, our guide on how to unlock outfits without paying lists the free routes.

The honest summary: you can play the whole game for $0. You can also spend car-payment money on a hat. Set your limit on day one.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

Play it if:

  • You want a long, story-driven open world and you will not miss the premium outfits.
  • You like wuxia films and want to move like their heroes.
  • You play on more than one device and want cross-play.

Skip it if:

  • You are a collector who must own every outfit; the banners are built for you, and not kindly.
  • You dislike AI-generated NPC dialogue on principle.
  • Your PC is short on storage or under 16 GB of RAM.
  • You want a tight, focused action game; critics and players both describe a game with a lot of everything.

Verdict

Stop playing NPC: if you have been waiting for a free open world that does not ask for money to finish it, this is one of the few that keeps that promise. Where Winds Meet gets an 8.1 from us. Points go to the cosmetic-only design, the strong and steady player sentiment, and a year of real content updates. Points come off for the premium outfit pricing, the convenience perks in the paid pass and a busy interface that critics flagged. This score is based on documented systems, pricing and player data as of October 2026, not on a hands-on playtest.

Worth your first hour. Watch the wardrobe.
